Documenting the graphic anomalies in the Tabula Peutingeriana, using emendations to show why each is unexpected, and exploring what such flaws may tell us about the chart's late antique history. A companion to the Animated Edition.
2,2:1 Vapincum
This emendation, proposed by Miller 136 and Talbert 802, is dictated by the realities on the ground, where Alpine peaks constrict the road to certain valleys and passes. While it is conceivable that the errors derive from the chart-maker having been misinformed, it is far likelier that the mistakes derive from a drafting or copying error. The only possible lay of the road is from Gerainas (seemingly a repetition of Geminas) to Vapincum (Gap). Talbert: "a natural, but careless, mistake (compare the horizontal continuation from Bibe, 1A4); hence the lack of information to accompany the continuation."
